Thia woke up one morning awhile back thinking, “No more dead people”. Contrary to Jungian theory, she was referring to composers who wrote stuff for the cello a couple hundred years ago. Though she loved those old guys and their music, she wanted to do something fresh. “Besides, kings throwing chamber music parties has gone out of fashion”. She began writing songs sitting up straight like a cellist, but soon discovered that slouching is essential to composition. Playing was awkward that way, “so I pulled the cello onto my lap and began fingerpicking it like a guitar. Chords came out that I’d never heard before, and the sound was beautiful”. She put on a guitar strap and now plays her cello like a guitar most of the time.
